The part of a building you only notice when it is wrong

A frame that carries its loads, a foundation that suits its soil, services that reach every room without fighting the structure they pass through — engineering is invisible when it is done well and impossible to ignore when it is not.

Because Zenith holds structural and MEP engineering under the same roof as the architecture, the two are designed together rather than handed between offices. Foundations are sized to the soil the survey found. The frame is set so its spans suit open-plan living and a shopfront's clear glass alike. Water, drainage, electrical and air-conditioning routes are coordinated before anything is priced, so a wall chase or a ceiling void is proven rather than assumed.

That coordination is the whole point. Most buildings are not let down by their idea; they are let down in the gaps between the people who drew it and the people who make it stand up. Those gaps are ours to close rather than yours to manage.

Appointed alongside our architecture or on its own for a scheme designed elsewhere. Either way the deliverable is the same: a structure and a set of services that a contractor can build and an owner can maintain.

Structural Analysis & Design

Foundations and frames sized for the loads a building will really carry over its life rather than for a rule of thumb, and checked against the soil the survey actually found.

Foundations & Substructure

Pad, strip or raft — the foundation is chosen for the ground beneath it, not defaulted to. Retaining walls, ground slabs and waterproofing to the substructure are designed against the water table and the fall of the site.

MEP Services

Electrical, water, drainage and, where needed, air-conditioning designed against the approved architecture and against each other — routes proven before they reach a wall chase or a ceiling void.

How we work

What the calculations are held to

Positions rather than preferences. Each one is something a scheme can be checked against at a coordination review, before the number becomes concrete.

Designed With, Not After

Structure and services are designed against the architecture and against each other from stage one, so a column never lands where a doorway wants to be and a duct never fights a beam it should have known about.

Sized for the Ground

The foundation follows the soil the survey found, not a habit. We would rather spend a day on a ground investigation than a season on a settlement crack, because the cheapest structural problem is the one designed out before the pour.

Coordinated in Three Dimensions

Wall chases, ceiling voids and pipe runs are proven in coordination before anything is priced. A clash resolved on a drawing costs an eraser; the same clash resolved on site costs a wall.

Honest Spans

The grid is set early and honestly, spans chosen to suit what happens both above and below them — open-plan living and a shopfront's clear glass alike — rather than pushed past what the frame should carry to save a column.

Passive Load Reduction

The lightest mechanical system is the one a well-designed building never needed. Shading, ventilation and thermal mass cut the cooling load first, and the plant is sized to what is left, not to what was never designed away.

Buildable & Maintainable

Services are routed to be reached, tested and replaced without opening a wall. A design that ignores the twentieth year of maintenance is not finished, however elegant it looks on the day of the pour.
